Hormonal Contraception
SuperPharmacyPlus now has multiple pharmacists that conduct contraception consultations

Patients aged 16 years and older, and who meet other eligibility requirements, can access hormonal contraception services through their participating community pharmacy.
You can talk to your community pharmacist about your contraception needs and work together to decide on the best option for you. Depending on your personal circumstances, the pharmacist may be able to prescribe a hormonal contraceptive (either for the first time or for something new). Sometimes, the pharmacist will have to provide a referral to a medical practitioner like a GP for further care. Your pharmacist will also tell your regular GP about your discussion and any medicines prescribed, if you agree, or provide you with a printed letter.
Please allow approximately 30 minutes for the consultation to be completed.
Do I need to make an appointment?
While all community pharmacists can offer advice on your choices around hormonal contraception, not all community pharmacists have completed the additional training required to provide services, which may include prescribing medication. It is a good idea to make an appointment to ensure that a trained community pharmacist will be available to talk to you about your hormonal contraception needs at a time and day that is suitable for you.
You can make an appointment by booking online or calling the pharmacy.
What can I expect during the consultation?
Your pharmacist will take you to a consultation room to make sure that your privacy is protected throughout the conversation. You can take someone with you if you feel more comfortable. After talking with you about your lifestyle, medical history, and sexual and reproductive goals, and checking your blood pressure and height/weight, your pharmacist can work with you on the most appropriate care option. You may get a prescription for an appropriate form of hormonal contraception, a referral to a GP to further discuss your care, or maybe both. If you agree, your community pharmacist will send a summary of the consultation to your nominated GP.
How much does a consultation cost?
- Brief consultation (less than 10 minutes) = $18.85
- Standard consultation (10 to 20 minutes) = $34.45
- Long consultation (longer than 20 minutes) = $68.10
If you are provided with a prescription, there will also be a cost associated with the medication. Your prescription can be filled at any community pharmacy in Queensland. Please note that all prescriptions provided by a pharmacist prescriber are private (ie. not available on the PBS).
