Introducing our New Manual Lymphatic Drainage Service at SPP

SuperPharmacyPlus is dedicated to providing exceptional lymphatic care through its comprehensive Compression and Lymphoedema Services. As part of this commitment, we are excited to introduce our new Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) service, led by our resident occupational therapist and ALA recognized Lymphoedema Therapist, Larissa Westhuyzen.

When the lymphatic system is compromised, it can cause fluid to accumulate in the tissues, leading to swelling, heaviness, discomfort, and a higher risk of infections. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised massage technique that helps alleviate these problems by enhancing the efficiency of the body's natural drainage system, the lymphatics.

The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, lymph nodes and organs that transports lymph fluid throughout the body. The lymphatic vessels generally run alongside the circulatory system, often following the same pathways as veins and arteries throughout the body. This close proximity allows the lymphatic system to efficiently collect excess fluid, waste products, and other substances from tissues and return them to the bloodstream for processing and elimination. The interconnected nature of the lymphatic and circulatory systems is essential for;

  • Maintaining fluid balance throughout the body
  • Supporting the immune system
  • Filtering out toxins and waste

The lymphatic system relies on muscle movement and manual stimulation to move fluid through the body. Where there is compromise to the lymphatic system, MLD can help.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system to move fluid away from the area where fluid is building up, and direct it towards regions with healthy drainage pathways. By using light pressure and specific massage movements, MLD helps to reduce swelling, improve lymphatic circulation, and enhance overall health. This non-invasive therapy plays a crucial role in managing conditions related to fluid retention.

MLD is beneficial for a wide range of individuals including but not limited to those with the following conditions;

  • Lymphoedema
  • Lipoedema
  • Chronic oedema
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Post surgery recovery
  • Sinusitis and Hayfever
  • Chronic Inflammation

How is MLD Different from Remedial Massage?

Both MLD and remedial massage aim to enhance physical well-being, but they differ significantly in their techniques and goals. Remedial massage employs deep tissue manipulation to alleviate muscle tension, pain, and stiffness. However, this deep pressure is not suitable for MLD, as it can temporarily impede the lymphatic vessels from transporting excess fluid. In contrast, MLD utilizes light, sweeping strokes to stimulate the lymphatic vessels located just beneath the skin's surface. MLD is specifically designed to enhance lymphatic flow rather than targeting muscle knots or trigger points, making it a specialised therapy focused on lymphatic health.

How should I expect my Body to respond to MLD?

After a session of MLD, you can expect your body to respond in several positive ways:

  • Reduced Swelling: You may notice a decrease in swelling and a feeling of lightness in the affected area.
  • Pain Relief: Any discomfort or pain related to fluid buildup, particularly in the affected joints may be alleviated.
  • Increased Urination: As MLD promotes the drainage of lymph fluid, you might experience increased urination as your body flushes out              excess fluids.
  • Relaxation: The gentle, rhythmic movements of MLD can leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
  • Improved Skin Condition: Over time, enhanced drainage and reduced swelling can lead to healthier-looking skin.
  • Energy Levels: Some people feel more energised after a session, while others may feel slightly tired as their body adjusts to the drainage.

It's important to stay hydrated before and after your session to support your body's natural healing process.

Contraindications to Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

While Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is generally safe and beneficial, there are certain conditions and situations where it is not recommended:

  • Acute infections: Stimulating the lymphatic system can potentially spread the infection.
  • Untreated congestive heart failure: Increasing fluid movement can exacerbate the condition.
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): There is a risk of dislodging a clot.
  • Malignant tumors: MLD could potentially stimulate cancer cell activity.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnant women should consult with their healthcare provider before starting MLD.
  • Immediately following radiation therapy: Generally, it is recommended to wait until the skin has fully healed and any acute side effects from radiation have subsided.
